SHS Portfolio Workshop and SHS Academy on the topic of Buy & Build

In a mini-series, SHS discussed how buy-and-build strategies can be developed and implemented in the healthcare sector with its portfolio companies as part of its portfolio workshops and internally with its colleagues as part of the SHS Academy.
The workshops were supported by Valerie Rinecker, Managing Director of Altenried Etti & Co, an investment banking boutique specialising in buy-and-build advisory services in the healthcare sector.

The SHS Academy focussed on the development of a buy-and-build strategy and the requirements for its full implementation, from pre-deal diligence to post-acquisition implementation and integration. Key factors discussed included establishing an acquisition strategy and defining target profiles, validating buy-and-build as a value driver and ensuring successful execution. Best practice examples and pitfalls to avoid were discussed using specific case studies.

The portfolio workshop focused on the approach to identifying growth areas and evaluating synergies with the core business by analysing market trends and internal strengths. The factors that need to be considered when deciding whether to develop capabilities internally, buy solutions or acquire companies were discussed. Aligning acquisitions with long-term goals and avoiding pitfalls such as cultural misalignment or overestimated synergies were key topics. The session also emphasised the importance of effective integration of operations, systems and cultures.
