ndd technology helps test penguin lung function
Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) live on sub-Antarctic islands and can dive more than 180 metres deep, their maximum speed in the water is around 35 km/h. Since penguins do not have gills, but are birds with lungs, researchers from the Fundación Oceanogràfic want to find out how exactly the lungs of gentoo penguins work. To do this, they are using the mobile ultrasound TrueFlow technology from the Swiss company ndd Medizintechnik AG, one of the leading medical technology companies in the field of lung diagnostics. The penguins actually participate voluntarily in this test, from which the scientists from Valencia hope to gain important insights into the physiology and health of the respiratory tract of wild animals.
